Spinal decompression surgery is a normal term that refers to several processes intended to relieve symptoms caused by pressure, or compression, on the spinal cord and/or nerve roots. You have many options, including a corpectomy, a diskectomy, a laminotomy, a foraminotomy, or osteophyte removal.
Decompression is a surgical process to relieve pressure and alleviate pain caused by this impingement. A small portion of the bone over the nerve root, called lamina, and/or disc material from below the nerve root is removed to give the nerve more space.
There are three general types of spinal decompression procedures, all of which could be done using minimally invasive techniques:
The disc is visualized underneath the nerve root and pressure is relieved by removing the source of compression herniated disc, a bone spur, or in some instances a tumor. Implants could or might not be required to stabilize the spine.
The small incision is closed, which typically only leaves behind a minimal scar.
This surgery can also be performed as a microdiscectomy, using a surgical microscope and microsurgical techniques. A microdiscectomy needs only a very little incision and will remove only that portion of your ruptured disc, which is “pinching” one or a lot of spinal nerve roots.
